Children grow up so fast when you really look at their time as a child. I can reflect on my own children as they grew in and out of love with experiences, hobbies, and extra-curricular activities. I remember Austin wanting to be a Bull rider when he was about 8 years old. He would ask any man he saw with cowboy boots on if they rode bulls. He never rode a bull, but he watched rodeos, 8 seconds and cowboy movies often. Then he fell in love with soccer when he decided bull riding wasn’t “his” thing. He would wake-up 30 minutes early before school as a second and third grader to practice his soccer skills on the side of the house, because one day he was going to be just like the famous soccer player Pele when he grew up. All I have are my memories of Austin as a child that served his passion from one thing or another until he found his passion for hunting and spending times in the woods. (we have photos from every hunting season for the past 15 years.) Looking back, I would treasure having portraits of him as he shared his love and passion for the world to see through his eyes. “All about ME!” sessions is something I have worked on for several years. I have bounced ideas around in my head, wrote out game plans for sessions, and then I realized the child reveals him/herself through the lens of the camera by sharing the things they love. It’s my job to capture their passion – nothing forced, staged or fake – it is totally about the one in front of the camera.
We are all busy running here and there, as a Mother and a Grandmother my advice is to slow down just a little. Take time for the important things in life; a session that captures your child in those single and double digit years will be a treasure in the close future.
